  • By far the best Chinese restaurant in Lisbon… er, actually isn't in Lisbon at all. But it's near enough and of sufficient excellence to be included in any list of Top 10 Chinese restaurants.

In fact, some say the Estoril Mandarin is the best Chinese restaurant in Portugal, and they may be right.

Located in the resort town of Estoril, about 32 km (20 miles) west along the coast, the Mandarin offers a menu of authentic Far East cooking that's the next best thing to eating in China. Their dim sun simply can't be beaten.

But if you're based in central Lisbon and don't fancy the journey, opt for O Norte da China instead. This definitely has the most attractive and welcoming interior of any Chinese eatery in the Portuguese capital - there's even a water feature to distract guests!

Two restaurants can be mentioned in the same breath for the quality of their food and attention to culinary detail - Nova Ásia and Hong Kong Grande Palácio. While Nova Ásia has the edge in terms of interior style and sophistication, Grand Palácio garners a loyal, native clientele - always a good sign that the kitchen is getting it right.

If you're staying somewhere mid-town, then the reliable Hong Kong is recommended. It's recently undergone a change of management and the new owners have added extra goodies to the menu.

Chinese flavour in downtown Lisbon is represented by Hua Ta Li, a well-established venue that's popular with tourists on all budgets.

West of the city is Xin Huá. Somewhat off the beaten track, this cosy establishment woos locals with its refined and flavoursome dishes. Further west is Xi Hu, situated in Belém. From here, Portuguese sailors set sail in the 15th and 16th centuries to discover distant new shores, and landed in Macau and Canton in 1543. Their legacy lingers on…

Back in the city, we've included Wok Nagasaki - a Chinese and Japanese restaurant rolled into one - because of its fantastic value buffet options.

Excluded from the list is the other Hong Kong Grande Palácio, a sister restaurant with the same name located in Rua Bernardo Lima, which offers exactly the same (quality) menu, and Xin Huang restaurant because of the karaoke sessions. Fun for some maybe, but never while you're eating.
