  • Lisbon's historic affinity with the sea and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean naturally means that fish and shellfish feature strongly on restaurant menus the length and breadth of the city.

There are literally thousands of excellent seafood restaurants in the Portuguese capital. Some are celebrated across the land; others thrive in relative obscurity perhaps known only to locals and those in the know.

Compiling a Top 10 list of the best seafood restaurants in Lisbon is therefore no easy task, and we are sure that seasoned travellers out there will point out that wonderfully inviting backstreet tasca that we've overlooked, or that surprise discovery overlooking the beach.

The list before you is a good cross section of the most prominent of Lisbon eateries whose menus do the undersea world justice.

One or two are expensive - Gambrinus offers up Iranian beluga caviar at nearly 90 euros a portion! Solar dos Presuntos is also pricy. But their gastronomy really is worth the recommendation from Michelin.

Restaurante Cervejaria Ribadouro and Cervejaria Trindade are national institutions, where excellent seafood is washed down with cold beer ( cerveja, hence the prefix).

Portugalia is another famous name, and the one listed here enjoys a privileged riverfront location, as does Doca Peixe which is situated in arguably the most pleasant of locales overlooking the Santo Amaro marina near the Ponte 25 de Abril.

Antiga 1 de Maio in Bairro Alto is a delightfully traditional Portuguese restaurant whose menu lists some more unusual fish dishes. Further west, and a little off the beaten track, is Espaco Acores, a restaurant specialising in gastronomy from the Azores, a string of islands set in the mid-Atlantic. This is seafood at some of its most alluring and tastiest, and not so easy to find beyond the archipelago.

The Portuguese national dish is bacalhau, or codfish. Apparently there are 365 ways of preparing this most versatile of fish and at Laurentina O Rei do Bacalhau, customers can indulge in the several versions listed on the menu.

Finally, Open offers seafood with a conscience in that everything listed has only been so if proved sustainable, and ingredients sourced through fair trade outlets. A very healthy way to eat!
