NileGuide Expert tip:
The Elevador do Lavra is not far away. Take a ride - it beats climbing the hill.
Description:
- Housed in the delightfully sounding Palacete dos Leões Dourados (Palace of Golden Lions), a former 18th-century monastery, Lavra comes highly recommended as a wallet-friendly guesthouse big on atmosphere and good looks. Indeed, the ambience is charming. The solid stonework portals, vaulted ceilings and filigree ironwork all help to distinguish this budget hotel from its neighbours. The 26 en-suite rooms, though smallish, are spotless and are decorated with contemporary furniture – IKEA has done the place proud. Top floor accommodation is always in demand but remember that these rooms heat up quickly in summer and Lavra has no air-conditioning. Fine art black and white photography embellishes the walls. The rooftop terrace is a real plus and affords masterly views across Lisbon's Baixa district. The Continental breakfast of fresh rolls, yoghurt, juice and coffee is extra but evenly priced. Free internet is available in the lobby. Note that the guesthouse is located at the top of one of Lisbon's infamous hills.
