Getting Around
Public Transport
The Metro or Underground Railway in Lisbon started in 1959 and has been a lifeline of the city since then. It connects the city along four lines: The Red Line, The Blue Line, The Green Line and The Yellow Line. Schedules of Metropolitano de Lisboa (+351 21 841 3500 / http://www.metrolisboa.pt/) are available online.
Lisbon boasts of a modern tram service run by the Carris company (+351 21 361 3054 / http://www.carris.pt/en/index.php/) which makes it possible to get around Lisbon while enjoying the sights. They also offer special tours of the historical areas and architectural wonders in quaint, specially restored 20th century trams. This is by far the best way to enjoy the old world charm of Lisbon.
Bus
There are also many hop on, hop off bus tours available that will take visitors throughout the city to the most popular sites. For example, the Lisbon Cityline Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour offers commentary along the route explaining the attractions, and the buses come approximately every 30 minutes between designated times. See website for more details. Hop-on Hop-off Tours: http://www.hopon-hopoff.com/
Taxi
There are an abundance of taxis in Lisbon and one can hail a cream colored cab any time of the day. In the evening rates go up by 20% from 22:00-6:00, but the convenience they provide after a late night out at a fado bar or a nightclub is priceless. A few numbers which can be handy are:
Autocooperativa de Taxis de Lisboa (+351 21 793 2756) Radio Taxi (+351 21 811 9000) Teletaxis (+351 21 815 5061)
