This animated eatery wins with its quirky, offbeat menu.

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

If you've time, walk through Bairro Alto to the restaurant rather than taking a cab. Exploring the warren of streets and alleyways really works up an appetite.

    Description:

    • If you're one for surprises, and appreciate good food into the bargain, then this quirky little eatery will appeal. First of all there's no menu, at least not one that can be browsed. Instead, Bosnian-born chef Ljubomir Stanisic has devised an intriguing 9-course menu dégustation, a tasting menu of cleverly prepared dishes that make full use of fresh local produce and a witty imagination. What's served on the night and how is always a secret, but here's a favourite: The bacalhau (codfish) slices are served pinned to a "washing line" with miniature clothes pegs. Let the savvy sommelier pair the wines with each course and all you have to do is eat and enjoy. The venue is small but not stuffy and the service courteous and entertaining, though when busy there's a tendency for the waiting staff to lessen the time between each serving. The restaurant is somewhat off the beaten track at the top end of Bairro Alto. Parking is a no-no.
