Turn up early for the outside tables.

• This is not the only restaurant in Lisbon serving up genuine Argentine beef. But it's arguably the most popular. In fact, it's acquired somewhat of a cult following among foodies who prefer their steak in animated, almost boisterous surroundings, and don't mind waiting sometimes up to an hour for one of the coveted outside tables. The steak is excellent, though be sure to emphasize exactly how you like yours, and then double-check the order. A side plate of flower salad – strawberries, goat's cheese and, yes, flowers – adds colour and texture. Interior walls are festooned with 1940s curios and memorabilia – posters, portraits and peculiar knick-knacks. Low light casts dancing shadows. The bohemian atmosphere is tangible. The vista from the exterior terrace back across the steps towards Castelo de São Jorge does indeed catch the breath: that's why tables placed here are so in demand.
