NileGuide Expert Says:
Genuine 19th-century cake shop offering an outstanding choice of delicacies.
NileGuide Expert tip:
Check your reflection in the mirrored ceiling above the marble counter.
Description:
Founded in 1829 and ably run by the Castanheiro family for five generations, this charming tearoom and pastelaria is the oldest confectionary store in Lisbon – the antique mirrored ceiling is quite unique. Among the specialities sold here is Bolo-Rei, a colourful, sugary creation eaten year-round but particularly so at Christmas. Other longstanding favourites are the bite-sized almond cookies and the rich egg cookies topped with walnuts that originate form the north of Portugal. Customers can order an assortment of sweets, biscuits and bonbons in handy gift boxes and can also choose from a range of jams and coffees. Upstairs, food and drinks can be savoured in authentic mid–19th-century surroundings. © Nileguide 2012

You will be able to taste the most typical Portuguese cakes, such as Queijadas de Sintra, Doces de Ovos de Aveiro (sweet paste made with just eggs and sugar), Bolo Rei (a traditional cake eaten at Christmas, made with sugar and dry fruits).
