Description:

One of the prettiest and most tranquil of Lisbon's public parks, the Estrela garden offers residents and visitors alike peaceful respite from the clamour of city life. The lush, sub-tropical grounds surround a small lake that is home to plump carp and noisy ducks. Manicured lawns shaded by lofty elm and outstretched banyans are prime picnic spots for couples and families. The more active can jog or rollerblade the park's perimeter. An attractive wrought-iron bandstand dating from 1884 stands near the north entrance and reinforces the yesteryear charm of the park which was laid out in the middle of the 19th century. A smart-looking café stands near the lake and serves light meals and snacks. A nearby kiosk sells newspapers and magazines. Youngsters can take advantage of an adventure playground. Literary buffs might be interested to learn that opposite the park is the English Cemetery where novelist Henry Fielding, author of Tom Jones, was buried in 1754. © NileGuide2011
