The only museum in Portugal dedicated to fado.

  • Description:

    • Portugal's national soundtrack is fado, a term literally meaning "destiny" or "fate". The music is an expression of what the Portuguese call saudade, a feeling of longing or sorrow, and is sung by both men and women to the accompaniment of a classical guitar and a Portuguese guitarra. The museum invites visitors to discover the history of fado, from its early 19th-century origins up to the present day. It's very much an interactive experience, with audiovisual presentations and multilingual panels explaining in detail the evolution of the music and its social and cultural impact. Antique posters, rare paintings and original discs help illustrate the development of the genre, and visitors can also listen to recordings made by fado's leading exponents including the great Amália Rodrigues and the contemporary voice of Mariza. A 90-seat auditorium hosts regularly shows, conferences and workshops and the museum store stocks a wide range of CDs and DVDs, books, postcards and musical instruments. © NileGuide2011 Museu do Fado (Fado Museum) chronicles the history of Lisbon's vibrant music scene. Dedicated to the beautiful Portuguese music style of 'fado', this museum stocks up vintage guitars and other classical instruments. Through wax figures, AV presentations, permanent exhibitions and a Documentation Center, Museu do Fado is a complete guide to this style of music. Besides its musical archives, the museum also houses a School offering Portuguese guitar lessons, an auditorium for cultural performances, a thematic shop and a cool cafe-restaurant. If you're a true music lover, Museu do Fado will surely delight you. Check website for more details.
