- Splendid collections of Palaeontology, stratigraphy, archaelogy and mineralogy are on display at this museum, which belongs to the Instituto Geológico e Mineiro (Geological and Mineral Institute). The museum was established in 1848 at the time of the Royal Geological Commission. It has a vast, the richest and the most representative collection of this country and the world. sadly, only a part of it is open to visitors these days.There is a public library and a shop where samples of rocks, fossils and minerals and other souvenirs can be purchased.
