This museum, located in the 18th-century Palácio do Monteiro-Mor, is flanked by sub-tropical gardens.

  • Description:

    • Located well off the beaten track, this specialist garment museum is nevertheless worth the detour if you're interested in textile production and costume design. Presented in chronological order is a comprehensive display of Portuguese and foreign costumes dating from the 17th century up to the present day. The apparel is representative of that worn by writers, poets, musicians, soldiers, politicians and the nobility. The museum's highlight is a collection of 18th-century courtesan attire including ball gowns and ceremonial uniforms. Embellishing the exhibition is a range of original accessories including hats, shoes, fans, shawls, bags and even undergarments. Buttons, cufflinks and cravats are also displayed. Fabrics such as cloth and linen plus machinery and equipment associated with the textile industry reinforce the historical thread as do a number of vintage dolls and antique toys. The museum is housed in an 18th-century palace set within the sub-tropical gardens of the Parque do Monteiro-Mor. © NileGuide2011
