    A fascinating underground history lesson.

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

A free cultural attraction that's priceless.

    Description:

    • The ground beneath much of Lisbon's Baixa district is an archaeological treasure trove of Roman and Moorish building foundations, remnants of medieval dwellings and 17th- and 18th-century brickwork. Expansive digs have unearthed a veritable inventory of historic artefacts – coins, buttons, hairpins, knifes and a wealth of decorated earthenware. One of the most fertile points of interest lies under the premises of the Banco Comercial Português in Rua do Correeiros. In a commendable example of how finance can underwrite culture, the bank has remodelled its basement premises and incorporated modern exhibition space to allow visitors a glimpse of some of these subterranean wonders. Glass flooring covers the remains of a Roman spa from the 1st century AD complete with a near-complete mosaic. Elsewhere, a stylish gallery showcases valuable finds under a vaulted ceiling. And get this. There are no bank charges. The tour is absolutely free. © NileGuide2001

A treasure mine indeed for archeologists and those interested in excavations, the Correiros Street Arqueolgic Center in Lisbon, gives enough evidence of life in the Baixa district from the 7th century onwards. Remains from the Roman Era were discovered here in 1991, and it was established that this very site was used for harbor work, for pottery workshops and more. A visit to this museum managed by Millennium BCP promises to hold your attention. Call for further details.
