Description:

  • Founded in 1888, Utah State University (USU) is situated on a bench that was once the shore of the great Lake Bonneville. Established through the Federal Land Grant Program as the Agricultural College of Utah, USU has about 20,000 students and an international reputation for research and teaching.

Old Main was the first USU building, and is the oldest building in continuous use on any Utah college campus. At various times, it has housed nearly every office and department of the school. Its tall bell tower is a campus landmark.

The Museum of Anthropology, Room 252, Old Main (tel. 435/797-7545), has exhibits on the early inhabitants of the Great Basin as well as on the peoples of Polynesia and other areas around the world. It's open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm year-round; admission is free. Allow 45 minutes.

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, 650 N. 1100 East (tel. 435/797-0163), displays a fine collection of ceramics and offers changing multimedia exhibits. It's open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4pm, Saturday noon to 4pm. Allow 1 hour. Admission is free. Pick up an Art Walk guide at the museum, which will direct you on a tour of the outdoor art on campus.

And the Nutrition & Food Science Building, 750 N. 200 East (tel. 435/797-2112), sells locally famous ice cream in a wide variety of flavors.
