NileGuide Expert tip:
A little gem right in the very heart of London, unknown to many visitors.
Description:
- "If we didn't serve traditional bread-and-butter pudding and apple crumble with custard every day our regulars would riot" the cheery manageress tells us; good honest British fare at good honest prices is served throughout the day in this brick-vaulted venue beneath St Martin-in-the-Fields church, overlooking Trafalgar Square. Don't worry about pulling up your chair on a historic gravestone - Nell Gwynne (Charles II's favourite mistress), William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds were all buried here - but most of the graves (and all bodies) were removed years ago. It's very atmospheric by candlelight and there's often live jazz (including blues, salsa etc) on Wednesday nights - check the website for details.
