Cittie of Yorke - London

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

The food here is hit and miss so it's often best to stick to a pint (or two)of Sam Smith's.

  • Description:

    • A pub has stood here since 1430, though the present building - cavernous, atmospheric and very traditional - was reconstructed as the Cittie of Yorke in the late 19th century using parts of the original material. The star turn is its church-like back bar, where, under a high pitched wooden-beamed roof sit long rows of huge vats (barrels) ranging from 500 to 1100 gallons. Opposite are "the confessionals", cosy cubicles ideal for cuddling couples, or, so close to the City, whispered deals. Good cheap (for London)beer.
