- Type: Wine Bars
NileGuide Expert Says:
It's not only the oldest wine bar in town but one of the friendliest and most atmospheric.
NileGuide Expert tip:
Finish the night with a schooner (a standard port/sherry glass measure) of delicious Gordon's Old Wood Tawny Port.
- It may looks like it's dustbound and derelict from Villiers Street, but fear not as that is all part of the atmosphere. Descend the side steps in the adjacent gardens and you'll discover a teeming atmospheric cavern of happy wine imbibers peering through the candle-lit dusk. They (Gordon's, not the customers...) have been here since 1890, making this London's oldest wine bar. There's an excellent selection of wines by the glass at reasonable prices, plus old-fashioned favourite tipples from the cask such as Madeira and Port, and when the sun shines drinkers can spill out al fresco with tables and chairs in Embankment Gardens. Typical wine bar fare of cheese and cold meats, as well as a couple of hot vegetarian dishes, helps soaks up the wine.
