Outdoor Activities in London

London's parks and green spaces along with the winding river Thames provide top notch outdoor activities. Boating, cycling, running and walking activities are encouraged across the city.

London's most famous of the 9 Royal Parks is Hyde Park centrally located and occupies 350 acres bridging the neighborhoods of Knightsbridge and Bayswater. The park's lake known as the Serpentine, popular for hiring boats runs into Kensington Gardens connecting the two parks. Kids adore the Princess Diana playground in the northwest corner, search for the Peter Pan statue in the setting for J.M. Barrie's classic book or run the trails favored by urban joggers.

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew requires a half day at minimum to explore the Victorian glass houses, the 250 years of plant history, climb above the treetops and enjoy tea break. You'll be sure to stay much longer than planned when you see the sheer beauty of the gardens.

30,000 roses bloom each year in Queen Mary's Garden within Regent's Park. Also know for the Open Air Theatre summer program and home to the London Zoo. Climb Primrose Hill for panoramic views of London. Stroll through the wild and rugged Hampstead Heath and enjoy a refreshing swim in the park's lido.

Just slightly further afield are Holland Park with a peaceful Japanese garden, Battersea Park and Chiswick House, used mainly by local Londoners and less congested.

Don't forget to hire a bicycle with London's new cycle hire scheme. All is takes is a swipe of a credit card and the bike is yours to discover London for an hour or a full day.
