  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Believe it or not it is possible to escape the crowds in London at some lesser known attractions with equally interesting information. London's top off the beaten path things to do will have you discovering neighborhoods and streets in popular areas not usually explored by visitors.

London's famous royal parks are indeed stunning but for green spaces with slightly more elbow room visit the Chelsea Physic Garden, an apothecary's garden and England's second oldest botanical garden behind Oxford University's. Situated behind some of London's finest addresses, sip tea and nibble on freshly baked scones in the garden's teahouse. Lord Burlington's suburban Chiswick House is a grand example of Palladian architecture and can be toured. Walking the grounds with local dog walkers and spotting sights used in Beatles' videos is rather entertaining.

For urban wildlife and bird watching spend an afternoon at Mudchute City Farm in the Docklands or the London Wetland Centre in Barnes.

Learn about the abandoned children of Victorian England and how they were cared for at The Foundling Hospital now a museum near Coram Fields. From there pop to Tower Hamlets to see a Victorian classroom how they were eventually educated at the Ragged School Museum.

Several more small and off the beaten path museum with special interest are dotted around the capital. Samuel Johnson's is credited with the first English dictionary and his restored house is open to the public. The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology is a in the middle of University College London where an amazing collection of artifacts can be quietly viewed up close unlike the British Museum. Another favorite off the beaten path museum is the Hunterian Museum dedicated to the fascinating history of surgery. Those too squeamish can explore the fours Inns of Court where the museum is located.
