Who could imagine that this used to be a dreary nursing home? Talk about recycling. The Victorian mansion block overlooks a green cobbled square and is the first London showcase for the U.K.-only hotel chain that is known for opening up winning hotels with clever contemporary designs, state-of-the-art facilities, and, as always, a chic little brasserie serving French classics. On the southern rim of once dreary, now trendy Clerkenwell in East London, Malmaison is awash in dark teak wood; tall, glowing floor lamps; a highly polished European staff; tasteful fabrics in neutral shades; and a portrait and bust in the lobby of Napoleon and Josephine, who spent many a "wanton night" at the original Château Malmaison outside Paris. The dark-wood guest rooms are individually designed and larger than average for central London.

we stayed here for 4 nights during the new year period 2011/12. Malmaison are generally a good chain and this was a classic London hotel- small rooms with quite odd Moulin Rouge decor......
