Location, location, location. This charming little hotel would be a steal in most of London, but given its proximity to Hyde Park, Portobello Road, and hip (and very pricey) Notting Hill's shopping and dining, it's a true find. Located in side-by-side row houses on a quiet square, Umi offers a bit of character that is often missing in budget hotels. Still, don't expect luxury -- although the decor is modern and inviting, it's pretty basic. But that's just fine, given that the basics are done so well here. Rooms are small (this is London after all) but spotless, and the staff is warm and helpful. Added bonus: The hotel offers both single and family rooms that can sleep four. Ask for one of the rooms in front, as the view of the square's garden is gorgeous.
