Description:
Come here for fun, not culinary subtlety and finesse. In 1993, noted restaurateur and designer Sir Terence Conran brought this restaurant -- first established in 1929 by Giovanni Quaglino -- into the postmodern age with a vital new decor. Menu items have been criticized for their quick preparation and standard format; but considering that on some nights up to 800 people might show up, the marvel is that this place functions as well as it does. That's not to say there isn't an occasional delay. The menu changes often, but your choice of an appetizer might include wild mushroom and truffle soup or else a goat-cheese tart with caramelized onions. You can settle for an old favorite for a main dish -- haddock and chips -- or else go for the whole roasted sea bass with braised fennel. Their oyster selection is one of the best in central London. Although some diners shy away from organ meats these days, the English still order calf's liver with bacon here. Note: A mezzanine with bar features live jazz every night and Sunday at lunch.
