Tamarind - London

  • Description:

    • In favor with critics as well as the lunchtime business crowd, Tamarind is the most popular Indian restaurant in Mayfair. The basement dining room has gold pillars and a tandoor window so that you can watch the chefs pull their flavorful dishes from the ovens. Chef Alfred Prasad leads a culinary brigade from Delhi that maintains the style of cooking they knew at home. The team selects the best, freshest ingredients in the markets each day. The kitchen prides itself on nouvelle dishes but also excels at traditional Indian fare. The monkfish in saffron and yogurt is delectable, and the mixed kebab platter, with all the kebabs cooked in a charcoal-fired tandoor, is extraordinary -- these chefs are the kings of kebabs. Your best bet for a curry? Opt for the prawns in a five-spice mixture. Vegetarians will find refuge here, especially if they go for the dal Bukhari, a black-lentil specialty of northwest India.

A standard curry house with posh dishes names and price tag to match

    • We found this restaurant very disappointing. Essentially you can get pretty much the same dishes in a good standard restaurant for a fraction of the price and in a more convivial environment....

      Yummy

    • To be fair, I haven't been in for a while, I generally order take out! It is off the charts.. the butter chicken, the lentils, sag aloo, if the take out is THAT GOOD.. go figure....
