NileGuide Expert tip:
If you're in London around Christmas time visit here for the full Dickensian sensation.
This elegant covered way was Britain's very first shopping arcade, built 1815-19, and even today it is claimed to be the longest covered shopping street (200yds/180m) in the country. It is probably also the most exclusive, dealing mainly in antiques, silver, jewellery, watches and leather goods. In fact every single shop down here is an antique in its own right, and the arcade is like a time tunnel, complete with Dickensian beadles. Their job is to maintain orderly behaviour, which, if carried out to the letter of the Arcade regulations, would mean the ejection of anyone running, singing or whistling, carrying a large parcel or open umbrella, or even pushing a pram!
