  • NileGuide Expert Says:

There are plenty of "spirit-of-the-age" homes and museums in London but none capture it quite so magically as Dennis Severs' House.

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

Take one of the "Silent Night" candle-lit Monday evening tours for added atmosphere.

    Description:

    • This charming Georgian terraced house was the home (1979-99) of eccentric Californian Anglophile, Dennis Severs, who recreated the rooms as a time capsule, evoking the style and ethos of the past: in Severs' own words, "a collection of atmospheres: moods that harbour the light and the spirit of various ages… a Still Life Drama". The premise of this very theatrical and most atmospheric visit is that the owners are here (as attested by guttering candles, the smell of cooking food and lit fires…) but always elusively just out of reach. Silence reigns aside from creaking stairs, ticking and chiming clocks, and a cat miaowing. Note the limited opening hours: Sunday noon-4pm, Mon (first and third of month) noon-2pm. Mon evening, Silent Night candlelit tours – booking required: 7pm-10pm (Oct-Mar 6pm-9pm).Booking is essential.
