Description:
Established in 1768, this organization counted Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and Benjamin West among its founding members. Since its beginning, each member has had to donate a work of art, and so, over the years, the academy has built up a sizable collection. The outstanding treasure is Michelangelo's beautiful relief of Madonna and Child. The annual Summer Exhibition has been held for more than 200 years. The main focus of the gallery, however, is on temporary exhibitions which are not related to the Royal Academicians. See the "West End Attractions" map.
