Southbank's Skate City

Description:

  • Used by skaters since the 70s and threatened with closure time and time again, this gritty, graffiti-spattered grotto under the Queen Elizabeth's Hall—otherwise known as The Undercroft— is still holding on. At any given time of the day or night, baggy jean-clad youths can be found hurtling back and forth on boards and Rollerblades, up concrete ramps, along ledges or just hanging out trying not to look bothered. Perhaps they are all just practicing in case the rumors are true and skateboarding has made it onto the list of official sports in time for the Olympics 2012.
