- Wimbledon, the world renowned home to the Grand Slam lawn tennis championships. Since 1877 The All England Tennis Club has sponsored a Championship. Only 200 spectators turned up for the first match and paid a shilling for the privilege. Today, over 500,000 people follow The Championships played over a two week period beginning the end of June. World class players from over 60 countries play on 20 courts for 5 main events. Centre Court, Court No.1, 2 and 3 all have reserved seating while the remainder do not allowing spectators to amble quietly from court to court. Tickets may be purchased on the day of play of The Championships by queuing on the morning of play or ahead of time by public ballot. To request a ballot application, send a self addressed, stamped envelope to the club by December. See website for ticket details.
Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum located within the grounds is stunning tribute to not just the The Championships, but to the history of tennis.
