  • Los Angeles is famous nowadays for its diversity and this startling variety extends to the world of dining. If you want to live entirely on hundred dollar meals of sushi you can do that here and more power to you! However, there are also a lot of very reasonable options for eating out here in the Southland, many of them featuring top-knotch ethnic food.

Food courts offer one option for affordable dining. Grand Central Market is a historic spot downtown with a wide range of prepared food stalls as wells as fruit, produce, meat, poultry and fish vendors. Just south of downtown is the Mercado La Paloma, a neat marketplace with a range of prepared food stalls. Then heading west are the slightly more upscale (and open air) food court destinations like the Hollywood Farmers Market and the Brentwood Country Mart.

Philippe the Original is a historic downtown spot that offers affordable fare in a cafeteria style setting. The layer of sawdust on the floor here is unforgettable! And, of course, Philippe's and Cole's have an age-old rivalry over just which of these places invented the French Dip. Another venerable downtown spot is the Original Pantry (open 24 hours, it just barely being on this missed this list).

Los Angeles has taken over from New York as the gateway to America and as such offers diverse and affordable ethnic food. Take Dino's Chicken and Burgers; the star here is the chicken dish (the burgers are supposed to be OK but just be like everyone else and get the chicken). The tangy marinade on this chicken has Greek roots and is based on a family recipe.

This list continue on through Ethiopian, Mexican, Peruvian, Italian and Armenian restaurants. I have neglected Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Indian, Vietnamese and Thai spots for lack of space. And it just goes on from there; it hard express the range of food available here!

And then of course there is the formidable burger phenomena, which is a long story on its own.
