Strictly speaking only the first five of the hotels listed here have been awarded either the AAA Five Diamond ranking or the Forbes Five Star ranking; the other five (#6-#10) filling out the list here are slightly more run-of-the-mill expensive luxury hotels.
If you are stickler about this ranking stuff, we created this Five Star guide that lists additional hotels in Southern California that do indeed boast the highest ranking from either AAA or Forbes.
In the United States, these guides hand-out the two most well-known and prestigious luxury rankings. AAA has been ranking hotels since 1937 (the Diamond system dates from 1976); while the Forbes Travel Guide (formerly the Mobil Travel Guide) has been in the ranking game since 1958.
The Los Angeles area is rich with luxury accommodations and boasts more Five Star/Diamond hotel destinations than any other California city! Some additional places to note:
Inland, Beverly Hills is an epicenter of luxury and is very well represented here. Another Forbes Five Star luxury hotel in this part of town is the Montage Beverly Hills. The fabulous Bel-Air Hotel is under renovation and is expected to re-open, hopefully in 2011.
The Terranea Resort, located on a spectacular site above the Pacific Ocean on Palso Verdes, is a nearby destination that is known for gorgeous setting, high level of service and luxury atmosphere.
Right on the beach in Santa Monica are the expensive and lovely Shutters on the Beach (East Coast beach style) and Casa del Mar (Art Deco); nearby the Fairmont Miramar is another notable luxury hotel in Santa Monica. These smaller destinations may getting into Four Star territory, heaven forbid.
In the Los Angeles downtown area itself there are no official Five Star hotels; however the Millenium Biltmore and Hilton Checkers are two beautiful upscale hotels in this locale.
