South Central/Compton

South Central and Compton suffer the reputation of seeding the infamous 1992 riots. Beneath the grimy surface, however, there are important cultural landmarks, such as the Watts Tower. Prominent figures from South Los Angeles include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg. The TNT series, Southland, takes place in South Los Angeles.

Home to the University of Southern California, founded in 1880, South Central has seen a resurgence in businesses due to student demand. Hungry? Visit popular restaurants like Lab Gastropub and La Taquiza for excellent food. Attend at special event or concert at the Shrine Auditorium, host of televised ceremonies like the Grammys, Emmys, and BET Awards.

Check out popular Compton eateries, Ella Mae's Cuisine and Loreto's Fried Turkey Restaurant, for fish burgers and tasty desserts like cornbread and sweet potato pie. Shoppers love the expansive Del Amo Swap Meet, where you can find hip hop jewelry, gets your nails done, and pick up a pair of stylish cowboy boots.
