Description:

  • A quick lesson in local history: Southern California was indeed once part of Mexico, which was ruled by Spain for more than 300 years. Long before freeway junctions, Mexicans won their independence from European rule in 1821. The holiday itself celebrates September 16, 1810, the day when priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla led revolutionaries against the Spanish, an event which sparked a decade long struggle for independence. Today, many Southern Californians have adopted the holiday as a day for celebrating their heritage. Nowhere in the United States is the holiday celebrated more fervently, with crowds topping 100,000, marching bands, a huge parade, cultural activities and plenty of food and other entertainment. Admission is free.
