- The Signal Peak Trail begins at Landing Cove on the northeastern shore of Santa Barbara Island. The trail leads inland from the landing area, past the museum and the beginning for Canyon View Nature Trail. Follow the left fork of the trail leading westward into the island interior. Continue hiking westward and follow the left fork again at the next trail junction. This will begin the mile-long trek to the southern shore of the island and the first part of the loop.
The first half mile of the loop leads through the interior of the island heading south. It makes a sharp eastward turn and leads toward the coast and a seal lion rookery on the shore. Once near the cliff line the trail follows the coast southward a half mile to Cat Canyon. Past Cat Canyon Signal Peak Loop leads along the coast heading northward to Signal Peak. The trail leads to the 635-foot summit of the peak then turns eastward to a trail intersection. At this intersection follow the trail to the right; this completes the loop. In approximately one mile the trail reaches the ranger station.
Santa Barbara Island is small and barren. The lack of cover in the form of trees and shrubs makes for the necessity of sun protection. During the late spring months the wildflowers bloom making this a particularly beautiful trek through the interior of the island.
