Description:

  • This piece of art was installed in 1975 and was designed by Joseph Young. The orginal plan involved shooting lasers into space. . . . in the end we got a carillon and 1500 Venetian prisms. The sculpture was refurbished in 2006 and this thing does still put on a pretty light show if you catch it activated. The controls are in the backroom of a Sbarro's in the nearby Los Angeles Civic Center Mall.

Incidentlly, that mall dates from the early '70s. Although often only sparsely populated after work hours, the mall is an impressive subterranean concrete complex.
