you would have to take a ferry from either long beach or san pedro to take you to the channel islands.

While there is bus service to Ventura or Santa Barbara where all of the kayak tours depart for the Channel Islands, it would be least costly and better for independent schedulng to rent a car. Otherwise you would probably be stuck with an over night hotel to accommodate the early departures of kayak tours. P.S. I have kayaked th Channel Islands and think it is one of the most beautiful experiences.
