I want to know where is the best place to stay in downtown LA near to shopping centers, restaurants, cafes and entertainment areas?

Downtown is not safe. I don't recommend it to stay. I usually stay at Santa Monica Downtown instead and take a cab for $20~35 to take me there. there are lots of good resorts at downtown Santa Monica.

I would recommend the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. It is next to the heart of downtown and within walking distance of the garment district, jewelry district, Walt Disney Hall, LA Opera. Ethnic eateries abound in the surrounding area.
