    Description:

They've become an L.A. institution, these breezy collections of ultrahip boutiques linked like departments of a single-story fashion maze. Shops include the latest apparel for men, women, and toddlers, plus lingerie, shoes, hats, luggage, cosmetics, workout/lounge wear, and a cafe. Fred Segal also has major star-spotting potential (Matt Damon, Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, and Kate Hudson are regulars; David Duchovny reportedly met his wife here when he asked her to help him pick out a suit). The original Fred Segal complex (opened in 1960) is at 8118 Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood (tel. 323/655-3734), but either is a rewarding shopping foray.

    Description:

The Brentwood Country Mart was created in 1948 as a Westside version of the Hollywood Farmers Market, basically a locale that combined dining options and stores into one convenient location. Today the place remains a small, high-end shopping center with a great food court.

Stores and boutiques here include, among others: Sugar Paper, Calypso, Toy Crazy, Broken English (jewelry), James Perse, Malia Mills, Turpan, Post26, and of course the Brentwood General Store.

Food and drink options here are: Barney's Burgers, Caffe Luxxe, Farmshop, Frida Taqueria, Reddi Chick, Sweet Rose Ice Cream, and Edelweiss Chocolates,

In its early days, star power was harnessed to help market this place and many star-biz luminaries were also regulars here. The place continues to be a celebrity hot-spot, if only because so many famous people live nearby.

It boasts a roster of over 160 specialty shops, such as BCBG, Aeropostale, Guess, Aldo, Banana Republic, and Nine West as well as a food court and its own Westside Pavilion Cinemas. This mall is big on community and kids' events, and is host of the annual Night of Delight, a wine and food sampling.

Since Westfield acquired this open-air shopping center in 2002, it's undergone a massive $150-million renovation in an attempt to revitalize this lackluster location into the area's premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. Along with a sorely needed face-lift, Westfield added 30 new shops, 7 new restaurants, a new flagship 15-screen AMC movie theater, and 260 luxury condominiums. Anchored by Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores, it's located on what was once a 20th Century Fox back lot, just west of Beverly Hills. Among the nearly 200 offerings are Ann Taylor, J. Crew, bebe, and Crocs.

    Description:

When the eight-story Beverly Center opened on L.A.'s Westside, there was more than a bit of concern about the impending "mallification" of Los Angeles. Loved for its convenience and disdained for its penitentiary-style architecture (and the "no validations" parking fee), Beverly Center contains about 160 standard mall shops, including the wildly popular H&M, and even a few boutiques that are open by advance reservation only ( so L.A.). It's anchored on opposite sides by Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores. You can see it from blocks away, looking like a gigantic climbing wall.

As of late plenty of posh boutiques have popped up all over the place as well as cafes and restaurants. Popular places to have lunch while shopping include Ivy, Cuvee, Michel Richard Patisserie for dessert or the vegetarian-friendly Newspaper Cafe. Description:

A sure sign that this formerly seedy section of the city is on the fast track to recovery is the massive $615-million "entertainment complex" at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Street (hence the name). Surrounded by souvenir shops and tattoo parlors, the gleaming 8 3/4-acre center contains all the top-end merchants -- Ann Taylor, Louis Vuitton, bebe -- as well as studio broadcast facilities and the gorgeous Kodak Theatre, home of the Academy Awards (really, you'll want to take a peek at this theater). The mall's other centerpiece is Babylon Court; designed after a set from the 1916 film Intolerance, the open-air space attempts to re-create an over-the-top golden-age movie set, complete with giant pillars topped with 13,500-pound elephants and a colossal arch that frames the HOLLYWOOD sign in the distance. Parking isn't a problem, as the six-level underground lot can cram in 3,000 cars.

The developer of this site, Caruso Affiliated, is responsible for a number of these well-designed and consumer-friendly outdoor shopping areas. These "mediated public spaces" are somewhere between a mall and a public area, though in the final analysis they have more in common with a mall. A wide variety of higher end shops are located at Americana, including a Tiffany outlet and an H&M store. There is a nice outdoor area and a big fountain. Much as the Grove is located very close to the Beverly Center, Americana is immediately next the older Glendale Galleria.

    Description:

Faded shopping centers are my cup of tea. I love the dated-ness of them, and the evidence of the human wear on the environment. Brand new shopping center seem to contrived and manipulative to me and there is nothing like questionable design from the '70s and '80s to cure that particular malaise.

Open in 1976, the Glendale Galleria has definitely seen brighter days and to me that is part of its charm. The anchor stores here are Macy's, Target, and JCPenney and this foundation does keep the place humming along.

The mall has had a hard couple years recently. General Growth Properties, the owner of this place, just came out of Chapter 11 protection in November of 2010. Caruso's Americana moved into the neighborhood recently, drawing a lot of shoppers away from the Galleria. Part of the fall-out from this is that Nordstrom recently switched allegiance and its facilities will now be part of the 15.5 acre American expansion in 2013.

At this there are plans for remodeling of the Galleria during the summer of 2011. The hope for this place is that the Americana and Galleria can be a joint shopping destination. At this point walking between the two adjacent shopping centers is a very interesting... read more

Designed to resemble an almost-cartoonish depiction of an urban street, Universal CityWalk gets a mention because it's unique. Situated next door to Universal Studios -- you must walk through it if you use Universal City's main parking structure -- CityWalk is dominated by brightly colored, oversize storefronts. The heavily touristed faux street is home to a number of restaurants, including B. B. King's Blues Club and the Saddle Ranch Chop House. In terms of shopping, CityWalk is not worth a special visit -- it's got the ubiquitous Abercrombie & Fitch, Guess, Sunglass Hut, and the like. Still, kids will love the carnival atmosphere and the Warner Brothers store.
