Getting There
Luoyang's small airport is located about 11km (7 miles) north of the city center. There are daily flights from Luoyang to Beijing (1 1/2 hr.) and Shanghai (1 hr. 30 min.). Tickets can be purchased at the CAAC office (Minghang Shoupiao Chu; tel. 0379/6231-0121) on Jichang Lu just north of the railway station. CITS can arrange tickets and is at Jiudu Xi Lu 4, Luyou Dasha (tel. 0379/6432-5061).
From the railway station (tel. 0379/6256-1222) just north of the city center on Daonan XiLu, trains run to Beijing (express train 8 hr.), Shanghai (14 hr.), Xi'an (5 hr.), Zhengzhou (1 1/2 hr.), and Kaifeng (2 1/2 hr.).
From the long-distance bus station (changtu qichezhan; tel. 0379/6323-9453), opposite the railway station on Jinguyuan Lu, buses run to Zhengzhou (every 30 min. 6:30am-7pm; 2-2 1/2 hr.; ¥36/$4.70/£2.35), Kaifeng (hourly 7am-6pm; 3 hr.; ¥42/$5.45/£2.75), and Dengfeng (hourly; 1 1/2 hr.; 6am-6pm; ¥20/$2.60/£1.30). High-end hotels can arrange comfortable private cars from Zhengzhou to Luoyang for around ¥1,500 ($195/£98). A better deal can be found by hiring a city taxi for ¥400 to ¥500 ($52-$65/£26-£33), subject to negotiation.

Most taxis charge ¥5 (65¢/35p) for 3km (2 miles), then ¥1.50 (20¢/10p) per kilometer until 10km (6 miles), after which the price rises to ¥2.25 (30¢/15p) per kilometer. From 10pm to 5am, prices rise to ¥5.80 (75¢/35p) for 2km (1 1/4 miles), then ¥1.75 (20¢/10p) per kilometer thereafter. The bus costs ¥1 (15¢/10p). From the railway station, bus no. 81 runs to the Longmen Grottoes, bus no. 83 runs to the airport, and bus no. 11 runs to the western part of town via the Friendship Hotel.
