Heralded as the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon really is a special place when it comes to choosing where to dazzle your taste buds! Famous for the Lyonnaise ‘bouchon’ - which serve traditional Lyonnaise dishes amidst intimate surrounding – the city also showcases the delights of France’s top chefs in a number of world renowned restaurants. In addition to traditional cuisine, Lyon benefits from an infusion of international influences; from North African to Vietnamese cuisine, Lyon’s ever increasing diversity is well expressed in the city’s restaurants.
If you’re looking for traditional, hearty Lyonnaise food, the ‘bouchon’ is the places to go. These restaurants generally offer reasonably priced menus in a home style atmosphere. Chez Mounier and Café du Soleil are good ‘bouchon’ choices. Both of these restaurants offer great food in a typical ‘bouchon’ atmosphere. But be warned that there are hundreds of restaurants in Lyon carrying the ‘bouchon’ name, but sometimes the title is just there to attract tourist custom. For a ‘bouchon’ that you can rely on as being authentic; look for a sign saying: ‘Authentique Bouchon Lyonnais’. These restaurants have been certified as authentic and there are only about twenty of them in Lyon.
Cranking it up a notch, Lyon’s bigwig restaurants are the places to go for Michelin stared cuisine. These restaurants may be expensive, but if you’re a foodie - or simply someone who wants to see what all the hype is about - you shouldn’t miss sampling the cuisine offered at the haunts of internationally acclaimed chefs Paul Bocuse (Auberge du Pont de Collonges) and Pierre Orsi. La Terrasses de Lyon is another great choice for Michelin stared cuisine, located amidst stunning surroundings on Fourvière hill, the restaurant’s terrace is one of the most romantic in Lyon!
Bon appétit!
