From street stalls to elegant dining rooms, paper plates to fine china, restaurants will be one of your best glimpses into the heart, soul and belly of life in Macau - and definitely your most delicious. Loosen your belt and dig in. Macau is a great destination for foodies. As you would expect Chinese food predominates but the old Portuguese influence still lingers in the cooking. Taipa is the best area to sample this sort of food as it has the highest concentration of Portuguese-style restaurants in Macau. Paella, Portuguese wine, freshly baked bread, ports and brandies can be found in restaurants here. Bee Vee and Cozinha Pinocchio are two popular choices. Downtown Macau is the place to go to find cheap (and tasty) open-air street stalls. Check out the traditional daai-paai-dawng and soak up the local culture. Macau is home to some seriously high-end eateries so remember to bring your wallet! The Lisboa is home to Robuchon a Galera - one of Asia’s most expensive restaurants. Foodies in Hong Kong love Robuchon, and the Macau venture is also popular. Joel Robuchon is the world's most Michelin-starred chef with 25 stars to his name. Robuchon a Galera has three stars and was the first establishment in China to win the Wine Spectator's "Grand Award." Their wine cellar has over 6,500 labels. Signature dishes include Le Caviar Osciètre, La Pintade et le Foie Gras and La Pièce de Bœuf 'Kagoshima' ($135). For something a little cheaper head to Senado Square. On the journey to St Paul’s Cathedral you’ll find street vendors keen for you to sample their food. Try local sweets and meats – the cheap way! Restaurants close early in Macau - most shut around 11pm. If you do fancy a midnight snack head to the big hotels as many of them have 24-hour cafes to service the all-night gamblers.
