- One of the first things to figure out on any trip is where to lay your head. Whether you’re looking to kick back in the lap of luxury, stretch a shoestring budget, cozy up somewhere sweet or party somewhere chic, the hotels of Macau are ready to tuck you in and treat you right. You’ll sleep well. You will be spoiled for choice of accommodation in Macau it is geared to all budgets and tastes. Wherever you choose to stay in Macau always try and haggle on the price, especially in low season where hotels are willing to reduce their rates. The good news is that prices in Macau are much cheaper than its neighbour Hong Kong. Unfortunately weekend rates are significantly higher than during the week. If you are on a budget, and flexible about when you travel, you might want to consider hitting Macau on a weekday. Also check hotel websites before you travel as often they offer promotional deals. If you arrive by boat there are several hotel touts in the ferry terminal willing to point you in the right direction. There are also courtesy phones in the Jetfoil terminal that you can use if you need to make last minute bookings. Budget accommodation is mainly situated around the central peninsula. It is a slightly sleazy area and prostitutes are not uncommon so be wary. The central peninsula can be found between Largo do Senado and the Porto Interior. You will also find lots of cheap restaurants and street stalls in the vicinity. As might be expected Macau is home to several high-end and mid-range hotels. These are mainly found on the Macau peninsula. The larger hotels offer shuttle bus services to and from the airport and ferry terminals. The majority of these hotels are clustered around eastern Macau – between Lagos Nam Van and the Jetfoil terminal. The islands of Coloane and Taipa also have a few hotels, although there is far less choice than on the peninsula. Cotai is another area you might want to try. Cotai is between Coloane and Taipa and in recent years hotels and casinos have been springing up on this piece of reclaimed land. The most notable is the Las Vegas Sands Venetian Macau which opened in August 2007.
