Hey, not at all, Machala is a small city.
You will hardly find expats there, besides a few Peruvians because it's located near the border.
There is a small shopping mall and its commercial activity is thriving, but nothing else. If you want a more cosmopolitan experience, you should pick Guayaquil instead, or travel back and forth regularly (4 hours by bus).
Hope to see you here

Hi, Machala is the capital of El Oro Province, it is a nice city, I went there only for working one day this year. It has changed a lot since last time I went in 2003. There is a small mall. Puerto Bolivar is next to Machala where you can go to eat seafish food. It is the principal port for banana exports. The oficial web page is http://www.machala.gov.ec/.
I do not if there are expat there from countries where English is spoken. As it is next to Peru, I guess there are perovian people living at Machala. Machala it is next to many other cities at Ecuadorian coast.
