While Madrid doesn't have the culinary clout of Paris or the reputation of Basque and Catalan cooking, five star restaurants in Madrid don't particularly seem to care; they're too busy doing their own thing in this cosmopolitan city of gourmet shops and foodie festivals. The Spanish capital's high-end restaurants seem determined to provide the ultimate dining experience as regards fabulous food, service, and atmosphere in what has become contemporary Madrid style - cosmopolitan but with a markedly Spanish flair.
One of Madrid's best places for a five-star meal is Zalacaín, a rather formal and elegant restaurant with two Michelin stars. It serves Basque and French food a la nouvelle cuisine in an old mansion setting.
Paradís has a lot going for it: located on the Paseo del Prado and sharing a stately palace (Palacio de Linares) with a renowned cultural center (Casa de América), Paradís Casa de América is a sophisticated choice for high-quality Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine.
If you crave a five-star dining experience from Spain's current culinary master, Ferran Adria (with three Michelin stars), but like most people you can't get a reservation at El Bulli or simply don't want to schlep to the middle of nowhere to do so, try Madrid's La Terraza del Casino (with one Michelin star) instead. Adria himself designed all the menus and regularly oversees the chefs here. The food is Spanish, the atmosphere is pure Old World-style luxury, and the building itself is a grand one dating from 1910 and sitting in the heart of Madrid.
