Barajas international airport is located in northeast Madrid. Nearby hotels cater to business travelers while the surrounding residential neighborhoods are really quite tranquil. In contrast to Madrid's downtown core, the area near Barajas airport has no major tourist sights, but the area does contain its own unique attractions for families and business travelers alike.
Our favorite thing to do near Barajas airport is to explore the romantic El Capricho de Alameda de Osuna park. It is an idyllic refuge of lawns; separate English, French, and Italian style gardens; fountains; sculptures; and a summer palace, as El Capricho park was originally built in the 18th century for a Spanish noble family. See if you can locate the labyrinth of laurel trees. Be aware, however, that the park is only open on the weekends.
The Feria de Madrid, more popularly known as IFEMA, is a large complex of modern exhibition halls. The facilities are top notch and host a full calendar of trade shows, conferences, and large-scale exhibits. Some of the events are designed for sector professionals only while others are open to the general public. Make sure you check their website in advance.
The Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid is well known as a once influential cultural institution and the former student residence of Spanish greats Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, Federico García Lorca, Miguel Hernández, and Severo Ochoa. The historic building currently organizes a variety of cultural exhibitions and events.
