  • Aside from being an historic building that houses tropical gardens and lots of turtles, Madrid's Atocha railway station is one of the city's major transportation hubs. Passengers can easily reach other parts of Madrid or Spain in one of its trains. And as it's located in central Madrid near the Big Three museums, there are plenty of things to do near Atocha station.

Across the street, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is Spain's pilgrimage site for modern and contemporary art. In addition, the gallery and art center is the resting place for Picasso's monumental Guernica painting.

A fascinating contemporary art and cultural center, La Casa Encendida frequently holds art exhibitions and workshops. The Prado Museum is Spain's premier art museum with an outstanding collection of European art based on the former Spanish royal collection. Art lovers should not miss this.

A pleasant place to while away the time, Spain's royal botanical garden (El Real Jardín Botánico) houses thousands of varieties of trees, plants, and flowers. Recommended for all seasons except winter.

A former palace turned must-see museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is a major art gallery based on one noble family's incredible collection. Along with the Prado and the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum forms the Golden Triangle of Art.

The Railway Musem (Museo del Ferrocarril) is a fun museum housed in a 19th century train station. You can see and climb aboard some real historic trains. The Strawberry Train to Aranjuez (Tren de la Fresa) also leaves from the museum.
