Visitors tend to focus on Madrid's downtown core, but there is much more of Madrid to see. Like the number of nature, cultural, and fun attractions located on the western side of the city near the Casa de Campo parkland. But you could consider all those things to do near the Casa de Campo as a secret you share with the locals.
The fascinating Museo de América holds a wealth of pre-Conquest and colonial artifacts from Spain's former colonies in the Americas. Packed into a mansion near Madrid's University City, the collection provides real insight into the different cultures that populated the Americas.
Actually located inside the Casa de Campo, the Parque de Atracciones amusement park represents a whole day of fun with rides and rollercoasters and sugary sweets.
The often overlooked clothing museum (Museo del Traje) is actually quite a gem. The modern, stylish building houses well-preserved historic clothing, regional Spanish clothing, and international haute couture items. A must for any fashion fan.
The peaceful gardens of the Campo del Moro, located in the shadow of the Royal Palace, are an expanse of green lawn, shade trees, and manicured paths. You may also cross paths with the occasional roaming peacock or pheasant.
An authentic ancient Egyptian temple transplanted to Madrid (as a gift for Spain's aid to Egypt), the Templo de Debod is now a free museum. But make no mistake, the temple itself, surrounded by a pool of water, is the star exhibit. And at dusk, the surrounding area is a favorite picnic spot.
