Monument to the Fallen Angel

• The Monument of the Fallen Angel is at the Parque del Buen Retiro and is the only statue in the world dedicated to Lucifer, by Ricardo Bellver dating from 1881. You will be surprised to see it though, as practically most of us have grown up understanding that the devil looks like a beast with horns, a tail and as ugly as one can imagine. This statue is stunningly different as the image is that of a handsome young man, clean cut with ripped muscles and the wings of an angel. He is perched on a rock as if he has fallen on it with one hand shading himself from the sun. The only similarity to Satan is that there is a large snake wrapped around him. Do not stare too long at the statue or you might feel a wee bit sorry for him.
