A former New Zealand All Black rugby star and coach of the Fijian and Italian national teams, Brad Johnstone decided he was tired of cold weather and so, with his wife, Rosemary, created this "flashpacker" resort -- flashpackers being backpackers looking for more than cheap hostels. They put their main building with casual, sand-floor restaurant and bar up on a hill to take advantage of a fine sea view. The outdoor pool and accommodations are down beside the beach. They do have a regular dorm (the coed, 12-bunk "Octopussy Lodge"), but they also have five "Thorny Oyster" private dorm rooms with ceiling fans. Each of their 10 "Rock Lobster" bures has a bedroom and private bathroom with outdoor shower. Atop the heap, each of the "Grand Grouper" units has two bedrooms and a private bathroom, also with outdoor shower. Although its guest rooms are spacious enough for families, the resort has no children's program.
