Huellas de Acahualinca

Description:

  • Situated 2km (1 1/4 miles) north of the Telcor building on the way to the lake, this remarkable site displays 6,000-year-old footprints of men, women and children forming a line along what is suspected to have been a riverbed. The question is; were they fleeing a volcanic eruption or just going for a swim? One thing is for sure, it is perhaps one of the oldest pieces of evidence of human activity in Central America. The site now has a simple museum showcasing the footprints.

It is best to catch a taxi here and ask the driver to wait to take you home, as the area is isolated and a little dangerous. A two-way taxi ride should not cost more than $8 (£4). The more adventurous can dress down and catch bus no. 112 in front of Plaza de la Republica or 102 on Calle Colon in Barrio Martha Quezada.
