Description:

  • This museum is in one of Manchester's brick behemoths (Mill no. 3), at the corner of Commercial and Pleasant streets in the heart of the mill district. Operated by the Manchester Historical Association, it's a good first stop. Exhibits trace the history of the river and the region, from a Native American fishing spot 11,000 years ago to its later role as a magnet for immigrants coming to work the mills, including Amoskeag Manufacturing Co. (at one time the world's largest manufacturer of cotton textiles). You'll also learn about notable Manchester natives, from Revolutionary War hero Gen. John Stark to Peyton Place author Grace Metalious.
