  • There are only three areas worth considering for accommodation. Business travelers will gravitate to Makati because it is the largest commercial area, while others will choose Ortigas or the old downtown because they are close to where they need to be. Tourists who come predominantly for the nightlife will be attracted by the downtown hotels which are generally cheaper than Makati or Ortigas.

Makati has by far the largest collection of up-market properties. They include the five-star Dusit Thani Manila Hotel, Intercontinental Manila Hotel, the Makati Shangri-La, and Mandarin Oriental Hotel. There are also some good apartment hotels here which provide more room for longer stays. One of the most popular of these is Somerset Millennium Makati. Mid-market hotels are harder to find but the Great Eastern Hotel is in this category while budget properties are almost non-existent.

Ortigas is rapidly growing as an alternate commercial center and here the Edsa Shangri-La and Crowne Plaza Galleria Hotel are two of the favourites. In the apartment category the centrally placed Linden Suites and Discovery Suites are both good while the Lancaster Suites fits into the mid-market category not because of its facilities, which are excellent, but because its location is less than ideal.

Downtown was the original commercial center but it has lost out to Makati, Ortigas and other areas. The Manila Hotel, still considered one of the best in the city, is located here as is the Hyatt Hotel and Casino, the Diamond Hotel Manila and many mid-market and budget properties. The Bayview Hotel is a popular mid-market choice while the Lotus Garden is cheaper and still convenient. This region can be extended to include Roxas Boulevard along the waterfront so the luxurious Sofitel Philippines Plaza Hotel and the Heritage Hotel can be included here. Several of these hotels provide nice views across Manila Bay and the bayshore walk is a bonus.
